British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
