Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
